Beyond the Frameworks: My Journey to PMP Certification
When I set my mind to a mission, very little can dissuade me. But when you set a massive professional goal during a high-pressure, transitional year, executing that plan becomes a true test of resilience.
Passing the Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam is one thing. Passing it with Above Target results in every single category is a completely different story.
But let’s take a step back.
A while ago, during a strategic career discussion with a close friend who works at Google, they suggested I look into advanced program management certifications. Having already completed the Google Project Management certificate, I was ready for the next level. I quickly realized that to unlock the path I wanted, mastering the PMI framework was the gold standard. I registered, set a firm exam date to create accountability, and the study marathon began.
Now, let's be realistic: life rarely respects a perfect study schedule. Balancing a career transition while trying to rewire my routine meant that my grand plans for dozens of mock exams didn't quite go to script. I arrived at the testing center feeling the immense weight of the preparation.
For anyone who hasn't faced it, the PMP is a grueling marathon: 180 questions, 230 minutes, strict security, and absolute focus. Midway through, the inevitable exam fatigue and second-guessing crept in. But project management is ultimately about managing risk and maintaining execution under pressure. I pushed through the doubt, hit "submit," and walked out to get my results.
When the proctor handed me the paper, I had to double-check the name. Not only had I passed, but I had achieved Above Target scores across all assessment domains.
It took about 24 hours and the arrival of the official digital badge for reality to set in. Today, I’m proud to officially write those three letters after my name:
Virginia Ragni, PMP.
It wasn't just a test of methodology; it was a test of execution under pressure: the exact skill I bring to every project I lead.
